Horseradish is the medicinal plant of 2021

It has long been known that horseradish is an extremely healthy food. It is rich in important vitamins and minerals and also contains plenty of fiber. It can also protect against bacteria and viruses. Recently, horseradish was named the medicinal plant of 2021.

According to a message, a jury of experts from NHV Theophrastus has chosen horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) as the medicinal plant of 2021. This was announced by the club's first chairman, Konrad Jungnickel.

Protection against viruses and bacteria

Horseradish is rich in vitamin C, iron, zinc and potassium and also contains a lot of fiber as well as vitamins B1 and B2. Furthermore, essential oils are contained in the sharp root. According to experts, these mustard oils can protect against viruses and bacteria. Because of its healthy properties, horseradish has been known as a spice and medicinal plant for centuries.

The NHV Theophrastus association also appreciates the positive properties of the plant. The association has chosen the medicinal plant of the year since 2003. With the initiative, the association claims to draw attention to natural treasures.

Through sensible use, these plants alleviate or heal many ailments - whether as an extract, a salad addition or a spice. The association will publish interesting information about horseradish in a brochure and on the Internet.

Too little potential used

"As a medicinal plant, horseradish has great and unfortunately so far insufficient potential," says Konrad Jungnickel, chairman of the association. Scientific studies prove anti-inflammatory properties, remarkable antiviral effects and strong antibacterial effects for the ingredients contained in horseradish. "This is trend-setting, especially in view of the increasing resistance to antibiotics," says Jungnickel.

Part of the daily menu

The sharp root, also known as horseradish in southern Germany and Austria, is at home in many kitchens. Horseradish refines meat and fish dishes, vegetables and sauces. Jungnickel, who as a naturopath advises many of his patients to follow a natural diet:

"Horseradish should - at least in the cold season - be part of the daily menu." Then the root is a real remedy in the sense of the Greek doctor Hippocrates, according to which the food should also be a remedy.

The positive effects of horseradish have long been known in shipping. According to the information, it was previously used on long sea voyages as a durable food to prevent the vitamin deficiency disease scurvy. (ad)
