Consumer advocates warn of alleged “miracle cures” against Corona
Various food supplements and plant extracts with an alleged protection against infection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 are advertised on the Internet. Can such “miracle cures” really do anything against the novel pathogen?
According to experts, spacing is probably the best protection against infection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Wearing mouth-nose protection and regular hand washing are also recommended to reduce the risk of infection. However, what cannot contribute to protection are various “miracle cures”, some of which are still being massively advertised.
Numerous offers of alleged Corona miracle drugs on the Internet
As reported by the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate, State Representation of Brussels, on its website, numerous offers of alleged corona miracle products have been circulating on the Internet in recent weeks, such as mouthwash or urine from cows, but also dangerous offers such as highly diluted arsenic.
The European Commission has recently taken action against such offers. As part of an EU-wide website screening, millions of incorrect and fraudulent content could be removed or blocked.
However, “miracle cures” such as activated water or virus killer pendulums against Corona are still advertised.
The Berlin Consumer Center also criticized in a recent announcement that consumer concerns about their health are being exploited by individual providers in the current corona crisis in order to increase the sales of their products with dubious advertising promises.
"You should definitely have these products at home now"
As the consumer center writes, more and more manufacturers advertise their dietary supplements or plant extracts with alleged protection against infection with the corona virus. As a rule, however, this is not permitted.
"Dietary supplements are foods and generally should not be advertised as protecting against, alleviating or even curing illnesses," explains Dr. Britta Schautz, project manager for food and nutrition at the Berlin Consumer Center.
According to the information, a supplier of nutritional supplements advertised in the online shop with the following statements: "Strengthen your immune system in the fight against the corona virus", "Arm yourself against viral infections such as the corona virus with a strong immune system" and "You should definitely buy these products now Have at home ”.
According to the Berlin Consumer Advice Center, this company deliberately exploited the fears of its customers and raised the misleading expectation that using the products could provide increased protection against infection.
In response to the warning, the dealer submitted the required cease-and-desist declaration and removed the objectionable advertising statements.
Deliberate exploitation of a specific accident situation
The advertising of a supplier of cannabidiol products was also to be assessed. In his online shop under the headings "Coronavirus and CBD" and "How can cannabidiol protect against viral or bacterial infections?", The dealer awarded the hemp oil offered a reduction in susceptibility to all types of viral infections. Another company also advertised an "Immunity Set" on the Internet, a compilation of different plant powders for the production of smoothies. According to the consumer advice center, the accompanying text left no doubt that the use of these products could strengthen the immune system and the immune system and thus contribute to the fight against the coronavirus.
Here, too, the Berlin Consumer Center rated advertising as an unfair act through the deliberate exploitation of a specific accident situation. In addition, promises were made here that violate food law from the perspective of the consumer advice center.
In this case, the required declaration of injunctive relief was not submitted, so that the Berlin Consumer Advice Center will now pursue legal action.
Report dubious advertising and avoid products
“The consumer advice center is fighting against violations of competition and is warning companies to do so. Consumers should therefore report dubious advertising measures to us, ”says Claudia Both, speaker at the Berlin Consumer Center.
