Test: Coconut oil contaminated with mineral oil

Mineral oil components in coconut oil

Coconut oil is a popular alternative to conventional oils. Nutritionists are currently debating whether the oil is healthy or not. A test has now revealed that there are mineral oil components in many products that are critical from a health point of view.

Coconut oil and coconut milk are becoming increasingly popular in many kitchens. But at least in oil there are sometimes things that have lost nothing there - and that may even be dangerous.

Half of the products tested are defective

There is too much mineral oil in many coconut oils. This was the result of an investigation by the "Öko-Test" magazine (issue 2/2020). Five out of ten coconut oils contained such large amounts of the mineral oil constituents MOSH and MOAH that they were rated overall as "deficient". These include conventional coconut oils, but also organic products.

No binding limit values for mineral oil components

There are no legal limit values for mineral oil components such as MOSH in food, only a non-binding reference value for vegetable oils. Three of the five defective products clearly exceed this - but it does not apply to tropical oils such as coconut oil either.

MOAH is considered to be potentially carcinogenic

However, it is more dramatic that all five products rated “poor” contain MOAH according to the results of the investigation. This is a mineral oil component that is considered to be potentially carcinogenic and, according to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), should therefore not appear in food at all.

Coconut milk less dangerous

The other coconut oils are "good" or even "very good" in terms of ingredients, packaging and list of ingredients. The same applies to the ten coconut milk products that were also tested: nine of them are harmless and therefore “good” to “very good”. One was contaminated with the disinfectant chlorate and therefore only received the grade "sufficient". (vb; source: dpa / tmn)
