Which complaints can potato juice help?
Potato juice? Doesn't sound delicious - nor is this juice. But it is an ancient home remedy that still has its reason to exist today. Everyone knows potatoes, boiled, fried or even in the form of puree and this vegetable is regularly on the table for many. Potatoes taste good and are healthy. But the juice? Aren't raw potatoes toxic? When you think of potato juice, a few questions arise that are answered in detail in the following lines. And even more: you get tips on how to use potato juice as a home remedy for a wide range of complaints.
Make your own potato juice
If you want to make potato juice yourself, please note the following: You should only use potatoes that have no green spots, germs or any dents. The potatoes must be peeled thoroughly and generously.
The easiest way is to put the potatoes in the juicer. The other variant is to finely grate peeled potatoes with a kitchen grater and then press them through a kitchen towel. The juice must be drunk immediately after preparation, otherwise it will oxidize, become bitter and also lose a lot of its good ingredients.
If you don't want to make the potato juice yourself, buy it in the health food store. This juice contains extremely little solanine, so it can also be drunk by pregnant women.
Home remedies - tips for use
Potato juice is a good home remedy, for both internal and external use. With self-made juice it should be noted that this must be drunk immediately after production. The purchased juice should usually be kept in the refrigerator after opening - depending on the manufacturer's instructions.
Stomach discomfort
Potato juice can serve well for stomach complaints such as regurgitation, heartburn and mild inflammation of the stomach. The peptides in the juice are responsible for the effects on the stomach. The potato juice has a basic effect so that overacidification can be counteracted. The acidic gastric juice is neutralized by the juice of the healthy tuber. It is best to drink potato juice over three weeks if there are symptoms, ideally 50 ml twice a day before meals.
People suffering from heartburn are often advised to drink milk. This helps for a short time. But milk later increases acid formation, which can then lead to the symptoms getting worse.
Pregnant women suffer from heartburn more often. These can also use the effect of the potato juice. But please only use the juice from the health food store and only for a short period of time and only when there is an acute need.
Potato juice with olive oil or St. John's wort oil
The combination of potato juice and olive oil also helps with the above-mentioned stomach complaints. 50 ml of potato juice are mixed with a teaspoon of good olive oil and sober, drunk before breakfast - over a period of two to three weeks. Instead of the olive oil, a high-quality St. John's wort oil that is suitable for internal use can also be used. This is especially recommended for those whose stomach is a particular weak point and who always react with stomach problems in the event of problems and stress.
Spasms in the gastrointestinal tract
The potato juice has a slightly spasmolytic effect. In the event of cramps in the gastrointestinal tract, the muscles are relaxed and the symptoms are relieved.
Lowering cholesterol and blood sugar
The proteins contained in the potato can slightly lower the elevated cholesterol level and also the blood sugar (cure a small shot glass full over four weeks, sober before breakfast).
The potato juice also helps detoxify the liver. We recommend a course of two to three weeks with 50 ml twice a day before eating.
Potato juice for skin and hair
Potato juice, placed on a cotton pad, can be used like a facial toner. This makes the skin soft and tender. Potato juice also softens rough feet and hands. Feet or hands are bathed in the juice for about 20 minutes and then only dabbed off.
Other effects of potato juice:
- Potato juice, diluted with water, as a rinse after washing the hair (do not rinse out) contributes to better hair growth.
- The juice from the healthy tuber cools with sunburn. Simply dab the affected areas with a cotton pad and let them work.
- For age spots that many want to get rid of, applying the liquid potato is worth a try.
Why potatoes turn green
When potatoes turn green, it's natural. The potatoes grow underground and when they come into contact with light they produce chlorophyll, a plant pigment. This gives many green vegetables their color. But with potatoes it is the case that this color littered the brown potatoes with partly large, green spots. In varieties that are naturally darker in color, the green is often not recognizable. Scratching off the shell helps here.
Solanine in the potato
The chlorophyll in the potatoes is not a bad thing. In addition, the potatoes that come into contact with light produce something else, so-called glycoalkaloids. These are there to protect the plants from natural enemies. The main alkaloid in the potato is solanine and this is toxic to humans. This substance inhibits the enzymes that are important for the functioning of the nervous system. In addition, solanine can destroy the cell membrane and this can have a negative effect on intestinal permeability.
Most of the solanine is in and under the skin and especially in potato tubers that have green spots and pressure marks. This means that the potato is almost free of solanine due to the generous peeling. By the way: cooking doesn't help to reduce the solanine. As mentioned, this can only be done by peeling and cutting out dents, green areas and germ holes.
Solanine poisoning
You don't have to be afraid of solanine poisoning when eating potatoes or potato juice. To get such poisoning, you would have to consume an extremely large amount. According to the Society for Nutrition (DGE), an amount of one to two milligrams of Solanian per body weight triggers symptoms of intoxication. These are symptoms such as diarrhea, headache, vomiting, scratching your throat, including weakness attacks, cramps, shortness of breath and heart failure.
However, a person with a body weight of 60 kg would have to eat around 800 grams of potatoes (potatoes with an average solanine content of 75 mg per kilogram) unpeeled to be poisoned. 800 grams corresponds to about nine medium-sized potatoes - an amount that is very rarely eaten at once. If potatoes taste bitter or just funny, you shouldn't eat them anymore, because solanine can also change the taste.
To the doctor
Potato juice is of course only a home remedy. In the case of massive or recurring complaints, a visit to the doctor is essential. But even if medication is required, this juice can also be taken to relieve the symptoms. (sw)
