Official warnings of heat record and UV intensity: better avoid long stays in the sun

June breaks all heat records of the weather record

The German Weather Service issues an official warning for almost all of Germany. Extreme heat and high UV intensity are expected on Saturday, June 29, 2019 and Sunday, June 30, 2019. On Sundays, up to 38 degrees Celsius are predicted in places. Protective measures are absolutely necessary. Long stays in the sun should be avoided between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The German Weather Service (DDW) expects the peak of the current heat wave on Sunday, June 30, 2019. In almost all of Germany, temperatures between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius are said to be wide - including extreme UV intensity. For this reason, the DDW issues an official warning and advises against long stays in the sun.

How should you protect yourself from UV radiation?

UV radiation is currently reaching unusually high levels. As protective measures, the DDW recommends avoiding long stays in the sun, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. But you should also wear a sun-tight shirt, long trousers, sunscreen with at least sun protection factor 15, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat in the shade.

New weather records in June 2019

"June in Germany has never been warmer and sunnier than June 2019," reports the DWD in a recent statement. If the hot summer of 2018 caused a stir in weather research, the next records are already set. Because the previous temperature record in June was exceeded by 0.4 degrees. This makes June the hottest June since the beginning of the measurement in 1881 and beats the previous record June in 2003. But this June was able to set a double record. Because this June was also the sunniest since the start of the measurement. An average of over 300 hours of sunshine duration could be recorded. Up to 370 hours of sunshine were measured in places in eastern Germany. For comparison: the average hours of sunshine in the weather records in June are 198 hours.

Weather experts are speechless

"New highs again! Gradually I'm speechless in the face of these climate records, which are now in series production, ”emphasizes Uwe Kirsche, the press spokesman for the German Weather Service. The results of the evaluations come from around 2,000 measuring stations that are spread all over Germany. (vb)
