Get better blood counts through a vegan diet

Do vegans really have healthier blood? Plant-based diets have enjoyed increasing popularity for years. So eating vegan in the future is a good decision, according to a recent study by the Loma Linda University in California, because the researchers were able to prove that a vegan diet significantly improves blood values.

A plant-based diet protects against chronic inflammatory diseases

Many people already have a vegetarian or even vegan diet. By avoiding meat and dairy products, of course, considerably more vegetables, fruits and nuts are consumed. The advantage here is that the supply of vital substances and fiber is improved. Thanks to the secondary plant substances (such as lignans, isoflavones, flavonoids and carotenoids), many plant-based foods enjoy anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which increases the level of antioxidants in the blood, which then protects against cell damage and chronic diseases.

The risk of cancer is reduced

Those who consume animal foods in a greatly reduced manner clearly minimize the risk of colon and prostate cancer. Furthermore, vegetarians and vegans are less likely to develop diabetes, and the disease can be better controlled through a plant-based diet.

Weight loss is simplified

Losing a few pounds while washing has a clear advantage for people who eat a plant-based diet. This reduces diseases associated with being overweight.

Great study

In their current study, the researchers at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health investigated the question of how the benefits of plant-based nutrition can also be demonstrated in blood, urine and tissue. The results were published in The Journal of Nutrition in February this year.

The number of participants in the study was 840 subjects, who were divided into different diets:

  • Vegan,
  • Ovo lacto vegetarian,
  • Pesco vegetarian,
  • Semi-vegetarian
  • and people who eat normally.

Blood, urine and samples of the adipose tissue were regularly taken from all participants. The samples taken were examined for different markers, including isoflavonoids, carotenoids, unsaturated fatty acids and saturated fats and vitamins.

Study Findings - Vegans have the best blood values

The research team came to the conclusion that the vegans among the participants had the highest values ​​of those markers that are considered to be preventive, i.e. can prevent diseases. In addition, the vegans also had the highest omega 6 and omega 3 levels, but the lowest levels of saturated fats. This was closely followed by the ovo-lacto-vegetarians and the Pesco-vegetarians, which, however, could not completely match the values ​​of the vegans.

With irregular meat consumption, no better blood values

Interestingly, semi-vegetarians had no better values ​​than people who eat meat regularly. However, the study showed that a plant-based diet clearly improved blood values. This should be an incentive to change your diet in order to live healthier and prevent diseases. (fm)
