Kidney failure from too much sugar?

If people consume a lot of sugar, it can have serious negative health effects. Researchers have now found that consuming sweetened tea, reduced-fat milk and fruit juice increases the risk of kidney disease.

In their current study, scientists at Johns Hopkins University found that the consumption of sweetened drinks can increase the likelihood of developing kidney disease. The doctors published the results of their study in the English-language journal "Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology".

Increased sugar consumption and its consequences

Sweetened drinks have long been known as a possible cause of poorer health. It is now becoming clear that even small amounts of sweetened beverages pose a serious health risk. The current investigation found that, for example, sweetened tea, reduced-fat milk and fruit juice lead to an increased intake of sugar, which can cause health problems. Too much sugar can add weight and lead to high blood pressure. High blood pressure causes an increased strain on the kidneys. According to the NHS, there are around 40,000 to 45,000 premature deaths from kidney disease each year in the UK alone.

More than 3,000 people took part in the study

The current study examined over 3,000 subjects. After people with previously healthy kidneys were medically monitored for about eight years, six percent had kidney disease. The experts observed that people with a preference for sweet drinks appeared to develop kidney problems more often. When subjects liked to eat sweetened fruit juices or lemonades, they more often showed kidney disease or kidney failure, the scientists explain. A high consumption of beverages sweetened with sugar is also associated with an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and gout, the doctors continue.

What are the symptoms of kidney failure?

Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys can no longer function properly. When the kidneys fail, the body becomes flooded with toxins and overloaded. Failure to treat this condition quickly enough can result in life-threatening consequences. Various symptoms can indicate kidney failure. Such symptoms include, for example, a reduced amount of urine, swelling of the legs, ankles and feet, unexplained difficulty in breathing, excessive sleepiness or tiredness, persistent nausea, pain or a feeling of pressure in the chest.
